New Hope Recreation and Development Center Awarded the 2013 FACES Grant
The Freeman Foundation has selected the New Hope Recreation and Development Center as a 2013 FACES grant recipient. The FACES program which stands for “Freeman Assists Communities with Extra Support” is designed to find and fund the smaller, overlooked non-profit projects in Sussex County. An advisory board composed of volunteer community leaders evaluate grant applications and recommend funding choices.
The New Hope Center was awarded $5,000 to support their summer program which serves over 30 youth. The daily agenda consists of both academic and recreational activities. Academic emphasis is placed on Math, Reading and Science with guest lecturers on additional topics such as Nutrition, Personal Hygiene, Bullying and Bicycle Safety. Youth enjoy recreational activities including water sports, basketball, bowling, cultural events and local trips. The youth also receive community service credits for their participation in the Delaware Read Aloud Program. Parents and community members are invited to attend a celebration at the end of the summer program where the youth are awarded certificates for academic achievement.
The success of the summer program, now in its fourth year, is due in part to the hard work and dedication of an all-volunteer staff.
